DIY belt squat using a landmine

Belt squats are an excellent way to go heavy on leg day without putting pressure on the spine. Belt squat machines tend to be large and can cost anywhere from $1000 to $5000.

I’ve made just about every version of DIY belt squat but this is one of my favorites because it is so simple and takes up very little space. When not in use the platform stands upright against the wall.

What you need:

  1. Barbell - I’m using my Rogue Echo Barbell, link to purchase here

  2. Weights - I’m using Fringe Sport Savage Bumper Plates, link to purchase here

  3. Landmine - I’m using my DIY landmine, check out my tutorial here

  4. T-bar row platform - I’m using my DIY T-bar row platform, check out my tutorial here

  5. T-bar row attachment - I’m using the KYLINFIT T-bar Row Attachment, link to purchase here

  6. Belt squat belt - I am using the Spud Inc belt along with the AbMat belt squat cover, link to purchase here

Step 1: Move the t-bar row platform into place

Step 2: Insert barbell into the landmine

Step 3: Add the t-bar row attachment to the barbell sleeve

Step 4: Add weights

Step 5: Grab your belt

Step 6: Connect and start belt squatting!

Ok, so this is the basic set up. After using it for a bit, I didn’t love how it can be tricky to get in and out of.

I received quite a few suggestions on how to improve it.

The thing I heard the most is to attach to a chain hanging from the ceiling. I can do this because my gym is in an unfinished basement. Other people may not feel comfortable drilling into the ceiling.

Overall, it’s not a bad option. It was easy to get in and out and during the belt squats you can hang on to the chain for stability.

When not in use, chains hanging from the ceiling may give off serial killer vibes, so keep that in mind

Another common suggestion is to attach a 2x4 to the platform off to the side, similar to what you’d find on a chest supported row machine at the gym.

This one works too, though I don’t love the aesthetics. I can probably improve on this one a bit

Which one do you like better? Is there another option out there that I missed? Let me know in the comments
